Mark Schirmer to head New London concert band

NEW LONDON — Mark L. Schirmer of Sunapee, has been appointed Music Director of the Kearsarge Community Band, replacing Aarne Vesilind, who was recently named the band’s Music Director Emeritus.

The Kearsarge Community Band (KCB) is a 50-piece concert band headquartered in New London and performs throughout the Kearsarge/Lake Sunapee Region.

Schirmer brings an extensive experience background as an instrumentalist and band director to the KCB. He is a highly skilled trombonist who has performed in numerous musical ensembles in Massachusetts, including concert bands, brass bands and pit orchestras for musical theatre, oratorios and operas.

Schirmer was a member and Assistant Conductor of the Bridgewater, Mass., Antiphonal Brass Society for more than 30 years. He is also a former conductor of the Foxboro Company Band, the Canton, Mass., Community Band and the Canton American Legion Band.

A Northern Virginia native, Schirmer received a B.S. degree in Astrophysics from the University of Wisconsin and an M.S. degree in Engineering from Boston University. Currently, he is a consulting engineer specializing in semiconductor and sensor technologies.

Schirmer’s other interests include vintage cars, woodworking and motorcycling. He owns several motorcycles, mostly BMW, and has traveled extensively on motorcycles throughout North America, Europe and New Zealand.

In announcing Schirmer’s appointment, KCB President, Matthew Ranson, stated: “The Kearsarge Community Band is indeed fortunate to have secured the services of Mark Schirmer. His extensive instrumental and conducting background combined with his enthusiasm and understanding of community bands make him an outstanding choice as our next Music Director.”
